Coolangatta (House and Studio)
91 Waratah St, Katoomba
Coolangatta Historic House 1889 was built by the Mayor of Balmain, Solomon Hyam. The house initially served as a guest house for his friends and family from the city. In days past, Coolangatta has played host to a doctor's surgery, music school and a variety of overseas guests.
Over 120 years, ' Coolangatta' was subject to metamorphosis, with walls and interiors changing as owners came and went overtime. The current owner has restored the home with sympathetic attention to period and detail under the guidance of the Heritage Council of N.S.W. The National Trust of Australia took great interest in 'Coolangatta' after the feature story published in Australian Country Style Magazine hit the newsstands. 'Coolangatta' was featured as a National Trust Home of Significance and noted for its historical heritage significance.
Decorated with luxurious fabrics, wallpapers from Europe, and carpets from the Scottish Highlands, the home has an eclectic, homely feel. Double brick, verandahs, and divine fitting and fixtures throughout.
Five generous bedrooms plus the Studio, two bathrooms, oversized working fireplaces in lounge/living area, plus hydronic heating throughout provide beautiful spaces for large family gatherings.

Beautiful house
Jane Tooher - 22nd January 2023Beautiful house and beautiful gardens. Very relaxing, very spacious home to stay in. Feels very private even though just a very short walk to shops/cafes/Main street of Katoomba.
Beautiful old heritage house
Matt - 6th July 2022This is a beautiful old heritage house with lovely furnishings. It worked really well for our extended family, the grandparents had their peace and quiet in the studio and the house was well equipped. It is nice and cosy in the winter time. The dining room and lounge is particularly gorgeous with a big dining table that we could all sit around. We also loved the hot pool. Rob is a great host and was quick to communicate with us. Thanks for hosting us!
The house was a unique experience for us to step back into history
Hong - 14th April 2022It was nicely decorated and clean. Big yet cosy for 12 of us at night when it’s freezing outside. Beds were comfy. The house was very close to the shops and cafes. Scenic World was a 25 min walk with the kids. Check in was easy. Rob was very responsive and it was thoughtful of him to leave the lights and heater on just before we arrived. A much warm welcome on a cold night with children and an elderly.
